The Club started raising money at the Christmas Dinner in December 1986, after the Committee at that time decided that these popular gatherings could be used to help others. A credible sum of £4,020 was raised for the Club's newly-opened charity account. The Committee decided that donations should be invested in something that was both tangible and durable, that the Members could see as a result of their efforts, and that the Club could identify with on an ongoing, measured basis. Thus it was that in June 1987 the Club donated its first minibus to a school for children with special needs, Ponds Meadow School in Guildford. Since then the club has donated 46 minibuses jointly with The Variety Club and The Lady Taverners, representing over £600,000 of charitable funds. Whilst charitable fundraising has never been the club’s main aim, it is nevertheless very proud of its achievements and the tremendous support from its members in this regard. Our most recent bus was given to Fitwaryn School in Wantage. 007 actor, Colin Salmon, helped us with the handover.
